What is a Fluoride Treatment?

A fluoride treatment is a mineral compound applied to teeth in order to strengthen them and help prevent cavities. Many commercially available toothpaste and mouthwash contain a fluoride solution. The higher concentrated and FDA regulated liquid and gel fluorides are used more aptly by professional dentists.

Benefits of a Fluoride Treatment.

Fluoride Treatment is considered to be a popular and extremely useful cavity and plaque fighting solution, agreed upon by majority of dentists. Fluoride fights the formation of tooth decay in three primary ways:

1. Fluoride helps promote the re-mineralization of teeth. Over time and excessive common use, teeth can become decayed, week and demineralized. Fluoride will absorb into the surface of a tooth where demineralization has occurred, and assist in creating and attracting other minerals such as calcium; in turn, producing new growth and formation of minerals needed for healthy teeth.

2. Fluoride can help the teeth to become more resistant to tooth decay. As the remineralization process occurs, the teeth can develop the ability to generate a hard, or even harder mineral composition than the initial tooth began with, resulting in long lasting and acid resistant teeth.

3. Fluoride disrupts the bacteria’s capability to reproduce and negatively affect the growth of healthy teeth. Fluoride can assist the mouth in preventing bacteria’s ability to producing acids, which diminish teeth, resulting in healthier, longer lasting teeth.

When to have a Fluoride Treatment?

Children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years should be treated with a professional and closely administered amount of fluoride to assist the teeth in healthy growth and protection. This is the timeframe in which the primary teeth come into the mouth, and should be treated with special care and attention. Adults are also highly benefited from experiencing a fluoride treatment, or using fluoride treating toothpastes and gels.
