Preventing Cavities

What are Cavities?

Simply put, a cavity is a hole or crater in the tooth that is caused by decay over a certain period of time.

But we all know cavities, right? It is the very last thing that we wanted to hear from our parents when we were growing up, and it is the last thing we want to hear from the dentist telling us after our child’s exam. But the fact is, as a Dentist and Dental clinic practicing in Oceanside California, cavities are very real, and they are very common in most people’s lives. Cavities almost seem inevitable to experience, but let me tell you, there are very real and possible ways that cavities can be prevented. As dentists, our jobs of course are to find the problems once they have started, and fix them, or offer you the best solution as fast as possible, such as; removing the cavity and filling it with mercury free white fillings before the tooth totally decays. But at Mission Dental Care located on the coast of beautiful Oceanside Ca, we have other priorities in mind, and that is the priority of your satisfaction, as our client and friend, if we can assist you to prevent cavities before they occur, simply by sharing information, than we feel good about our practice, and we feel good about you being pain free.

How to Prevent Cavities!

There are many ways to prevent cavities. There are many solutions, options and choices available in the dental market today that claim they are the best way for preventing cavities, tooth pain and tooth decay. You can find a slew of options at your local grocery store or shopping center. Just turn on the television for a couple of minutes and you can find some commercial claiming that if you buy there product today, you’re cavity worries will be flushed down the drain. Though some of those options may work well for you, we recommend sticking with the simplest, easiest and most proven forms for preventing cavities:

1. Watch what you eat.

a. One of the major cavity creating bad guys that we’ve all heard about since we were little rug-rats running around eating rocks, ants and floor fallen crumbs, is that slippery yet tasty guy we all know as “sugar!” Mmm, can you imagine those delicious mouth watering red chewy candies, tempting rich and chocolaty brownies, ice cold melts-in-your mouth almond sweet ice cream, and so on and so on. Im sure you can name your favorite enticing sugary delight, we all have one, but the most important question we need to ask ourselves is this, “is two minutes of pleasure worth a lifetime of pain?” Cavities are not fun. They hurt. They sting. They can cost a lot of money to fix, especially if you have a large family, but the truth is that they CAN be prevented. If you find that you must eat sugar, then we recommend finding it in it’s most natural form of fructose before it is processed, and THE BEST PLACE TO FIND THAT IS DIRECTLY INSIDE OF YOUR FRUITS!

b. Eat more fruits and less processed sugary foods when trying to prevent cavities. That’s the first most important part we recommend you do as a dentist here in Oceanside California with many years of experience of cavity prevention and repairs. The next part of watching what you eat relates directly to the kinds of foods you eat. We’re talking about high cholesterol, greasy acidic foods that not only can cause you to experience heart problems, liver problems and eventually death, but they eat away the enamel on your teeth, creating cavities much faster than I’m sure you’d prefer! So how can we both solve the problem of obesity and cavities sprawling across the United States like disease, both at the same time?! Its simple: Eat more organic foods! Eat more raw foods! Stop eating high acidic foods that cause poor health and cavity ridden teeth, and begin improving your level of energy, stamina and oral hygiene simply by adding more organic foods, fruits and vegetables to your daily diet!

2. Watch what you put into you body.

a. Obviously foods are the first thing we think of when we are discussing what goes into our bodies, unfortunately in our modern day world it is not the only thing that we put into ourselves. One of the fastest, and most drastic ways we can start experiencing the unpleasant pain of cavities, is by smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Both of these substances are filled with chemicals that not only destroy the bodies internal organs, causing millions upon millions of people to experience dreadful suffering and eventually death all over the world, but they cause our teeth to decay, our breath to stink, and even possibly our skin to grow old and wrinkled much before its time.

b. If you are a heavy drinker, then we recommend firstly that you seek professional care to assist you in converting that harmful habit into a more productive one. If you do drink, but lightly, just know that the less and less you drink, the more opportunity you will have to prevent the onslaught of cavities before they even start. The same goes for smoking cigarettes. Quitting either of these substance is not an easy task, and it is often much easier said than done, but to truly know yourself, and develop the mental strength to overcome your addictions, will not only make you a better and more healthy human being, but it will set you on the road to being cavity free!

3. Take care of that mouth!

a. Practicing good oral hygiene is not rocket science, though it does require strict habit setting and personal consciousness to become a person who has a “clean mouth”. Here is our daily recipe to cavity protection success! (of course including the two topics from above) We recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice per day with a cavity fighting toothpaste, natural if possible; brush your teeth with a small pocket size toothbrush after every meal; rinse your mouth out twice per day with cavity fighting mouth rinse; floss between each tooth at least twice per day, and maintain your routinely dental checkup and cleaning from your local dentist.

4. Educate

a. It is true that the children are the next generation of this world. When you are a child, it is the best time to begin practicing good oral hygienic habits, for when you grow up and become an adult, the habit is already ingrained and is simply another part of your daily life. We need to educate the children of this planet if we want our future generations to be health conscious and cavity free. Even more importantly is that we need to educate ourselves so we can lead by example! A good leader often speaks less and acts more!

Hopefully these tips will assist you to enjoy a cavity free mouth!!
